The Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Nasiru Gusau Marafa, has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in Zamfara State.
Marafa was reportedly killed on Sunday, September 6, 2026, while returning from Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
The National Open University of Nigeria confirmed his death in a statement signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi.
The university described the death of the Bursar as a profound loss to the institution, colleagues and the wider academic community.
Marafa was appointed Bursar of NOUN in September 2022 and was serving a five-year tenure expected to end in September 2027.
Details surrounding the attack remain sketchy, and the identity of the attackers has not been officially disclosed.
His death comes amid continuing concerns over attacks by armed groups in parts of Zamfara State and other areas of north-western Nigeria.
The university expressed condolences to Marafa’s family, friends and colleagues, while mourning what it described as the loss of a dedicated administrator and member of the university community.
